Cycling in the Scottish Highlands

Writer: Nina PriceNina Price

If you want to challenge yourself and bike round the Scottish highlands this trip is for you. Think Loch’s galore, rolling Scottish hills, forest, quaint villages, fabulous cuisine and you might even get to see Nessie if you keep an eye out.

This 8 day trip (5 biking) starts in Inverness, the capital of the Scottish highland then heads to Drumnadrochit where you can visit the newly opened Loch Ness Monster Exhibition Centre. Cycle along the hills and enjoy the scenery until you are rewarded with views of Loch Ness carrying on to Fort Augustus.Carrying on along the hills the ride takes you to the town of Fort William in the shadow of Ben Nevis.

Explore for the day by taking a boat ride on the Loch looking for seals, or jump on the train to Mallaig and cross the Glenfinnan or now the famous Harry potter Viaduct. For the real adventurous out there you can even climb Ben Nevis.

Picking up the trail from Rannoch you then cycle through more forest, lochs and end up in the pretty town at Pitlochry. From there you can explore the town by foot or choose to cycle further to visit Blair Castle.

All in all this is a great trip for those who want to see the Scottish highlands in more detail. It’s self guided, staying in local bed and breakfasts where you get a hearty Scottish breakfast before you take to the hills. Don’t forget to try the local specialty of haggis.
